Dangerous Diets

By

Many diets are based on calories. It is true that restricting your calories will make you lose weight, but it is also true that restricting your calorie intake too much will make your body go into starvation mode and lead to weight gain in the long run. Talk to your doctor about what calorie intake is right for you. At the very least, you should not go below your basal metabolic rate (the amount of calories your body needs to meet its basic functions). You can determine this rate using calculators available on the Internet.

Liquid diets often are also extremely restrictive on calories. Although advertised as diets that cleanse or detoxify your system, these diets can often lead to insufficient nutrient intake. Sometimes liquid diets are recommended by doctors for patients who are morbidly obese or who have life threatening illnesses such as cancer. The doctor recommends liquid diets are very carefully designed to meet all your body's need and are not the same as the fad diets that so often show up in magazines.

The Atkins diet has become extremely popular, and it is often successful in helping people lose weight. However, if you choose this diet you have to be extremely careful about the amount of cholesterol you are consuming. Even though it is better for your heart to be thin, continuously consuming large amounts of cholesterol will outweigh the benefits of the weight loss. Also, make sure that your diet remains rich in nutrients from fruits and vegetables. Fruits, vegetables, and whole grains are nutrient-rich carbohydrates that should not be restricted in your diet.

One kind of diet that you should absolutely avoid is a one food diet. Sometimes you will see diets telling you to just eat grapefruit or just eat cabbage. Whatever the food, these diets are harmful to your health and can do lasting damage if followed for a long time. Your body needs a variety of nutrients for energy and to keep your body running and no one food can provide all it needs.

While supplements and vitamins can enhance your health, approach diets that rely heavily on them with caution. Supplements aren't regulated in the same way that regular medicines are, and the dosages suggested by supplement-based diets are often extremely high. Sometimes the result is the diet simply doesn't work, but sometimes these diets can lead you to intake toxic amounts of these supplements or upset the natural balance of vitamins and other nutrients in your body. Weight loss should be a part of making lifetime changes in your daily habits to better your health.

Many fad diets can make you drop the pounds fast, but they are harmful for your health, are unsustainable, and will not keep the weight off for long. Slowly switching to a balanced diet and getting plenty of exercise is the answer for meeting long-term weight loss goals.
